The GRE is an important admissions requirement for many notable graduate programmes around the world. Some popular programmes requiring the GRE in Singapore are Duke-NUS PhD, INSEAD PhD, NUS’ Masters In Business Analytics and LKY School of Public Policy, etc. Most students can perform reasonably well for the GRE, though the test is highly competitive, so scoring in the 90th percentile is both the goal and the challenge.

The GRE General Test is available online year-round, providing flexibility for test-takers. In Singapore, you can take the test at a Prometric center or opt for the convenient at-home version. The at-home test is accessible 24/7 and maintains high security with both human and AI proctors, ensuring the same quality experience as the center-based test.

You’ll find availability for the GRE at Prometric test centers from Monday to Friday. You are allowed to take the GRE General Test once every 21 days and up to five times in any rolling 12-month period (365 days), even if you have canceled previous scores.

When planning your test date, consider your application deadlines, as it takes 8–10 days to receive your score report after the test date. Schools may receive your scores more quickly depending on their chosen delivery method, with electronic scores sent twice a week.

To ensure you secure your preferred test center, date, and time, it’s advisable to register three to four months in advance. If you’re opting for the at-home test, you have more flexibility and can potentially schedule it on short notice if necessary.

The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is a computer-delivered admissions test for Graduate and Business Schools worldwide. The GRE General Test contains three main segments – Analytical Writing, Quantitative Reasoning, and Verbal Reasoning. 

The test sections and timing have changed since September 22, 2023. You have about 1 hour and 58 minutes to complete the test.

Scoring scale:

• Analytical Writing: 0–6, in half point increments
• Quantitative Reasoning: 130–170, in 1 point increments
• Verbal Reasoning: 130–170, in 1 point increments

If no questions are answered for a specific measure (e.g., Verbal Reasoning), then you will receive a No Score (NS) for that measure. ETS also makes available test-taker photos and essay responses on the Analytical Writing section of the GRE revised General Test to designated score recipient schools.

In order to understand how you stack up against other GRE test-takers worldwide, you should refer to the Percentile Rank. Percentile Rank is the percent of test-takers that scored less than you. Here’s how top scores distribute across percentiles:

• Verbal Reasoning: scores of 161-170 fall within the 87th – 99th percentile
• Quantitative Reasoning: scores of 161-170 fall within the 80th – 98th percentile
• Analytical Writing: scores of 5.0-6.0 fall within the 93rd – 99th percentile

After taking the GRE revised General Test, you can choose to either report or cancel your scores at the test center. Unofficial scores for Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning are available immediately, while the Analytical Writing score is not. You can send official scores to up to four institutions for free, with these scores available in your My GRE Account and sent to recipients about 10-15 days later.
