About The SSAT
The SSAT, or Secondary School Admission Test, is a crucial standardized exam utilized by independent and private schools as a determining factor in their admissions process.
The SSAT is an easier version of the SAT that was designed as an aptitude test to measure a student’s ability in core subject areas independent of a student’s school record.
Students take the test according to their current grade, not the one to which they’ll be applying. If you’re in 4th grade, you’d take the Elementary level test, not the Middle level one. Similarly, 7th graders applying to 8th grade would take the Middle level test, not the Upper level test.
The SSAT measures the basic Verbal, Math and Reading skills students need for successful performance in independent schools. It emphasizes critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are essential for academic success.
SSAT Test Dates
The SSAT is offered several times throughout the year, so it is important for students to plan ahead and schedule the test well in advance of the application deadline for the schools they are interested in attending.
It’s also a good idea to check specific test dates and registration deadlines for the schools you are applying to, as some schools may have specific test date requirements.
It’s also recommended for students to take the SSAT more than once, as some schools will accept the highest score from multiple test dates. This can be beneficial for students who may not have performed as well as they hoped on their first attempt.

SSAT Score Guide
The SSAT consists of 3 sections: Verbal, Quantitative (Math), and Reading Comprehension. Additionally, there will also be 2 un-scored sections: Writing Sample and Experimental.
The SSAT is divided into 3 levels:
Elementary Level
This level is suited for students currently in the 3rd and 4th grade who are applying for admissions to 4th and 5th grade respectively. The test lasts 1 hour and 50 minutes (including break).
Total scaled score range of 900 to 1800.
Middle Level
This level is suited to students currently in 5th-7th grade who seek admissions to 6th-8th grade. The test lasts 3 hours and 5 minutes (including break).
Total scaled score range of 1320 to 2130.
Upper Level
This level is suited to students currently in 8th-11th grade who are applying for admissions to 9th grade through Post Graduate. The test lasts 3 hours and 5 minutes (including break).
Total scaled score range of 1500 to 2400.

A good SSAT score varies by school and competition but generally, upper percentile scores are favorable. For the Lower Level SSAT, 80th percentile or above; for the Middle and Upper Levels, 90th percentile or above is deemed good.
However, keep in mind that these are general guidelines and that different schools may have different standards for what constitutes a good SSAT score. Some highly selective schools may require scores in the 99th percentile, while other schools may be more flexible with their admissions criteria.
