Medical School Admissions Overview

Generally speaking, local students have 4 destinations to choose from: the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, or study locally in Singapore.

While each destination has their pros and cons, the most common choice (and desirable destination) is the UK. This is because their medical programmes are very competitive, and their certificates are globally recognised. In fact, for 2025, 4 out of the top 10 medical schools are in the UK (Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, and UCL).

Below, you can find the guide to each destination and their notable programs:

Medical School Application Key Deadlines

Some of the world’s best medical schools are located in countries such as the UK, Australia, and Ireland. These destinations are particularly popular among students in Singapore as they offer medical programs recognised by the Singapore Medical Council.

This list provides typical timelines and insights to assist in planning your medical school application efficiently. As timelines can slightly vary annually, bookmark our Expert Insights and Key Deadlines page for medical schools.

  • Australia: Australian medical schools operate on a unique admissions cycle, with programs starting in February instead of the more common September intake.
    • Application Deadline: June – End September
    • Intake: February of the following year
  • UK: Applications must be submitted through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) by 15 October to enroll in next year’s September intake.
    • Application Deadline: 15 October
    • Intake: September of the following year
  • Singapore: NUS and NTU have different timelines based on your academic curriculum. IB students must apply by end-February, while A-level students can apply until mid-March after getting their results.
    • Application Deadline: End February / Mid March
    • Intake: August / September of the following year
  • Ireland: Applications open in December and run on a rolling basis until March of the next year. Early applicants (before December) may be considered for interviews, while late applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
    • Application Deadline: 15 January
    • Intake: September of the same year

Medical School Admission Qualifications

Before diving into requirements, it’s important to reflect on why you want to pursue medicine. Admissions committees look for candidates with genuine motivation, empathy, resilience, and a clear understanding of the profession. Your journey starts with introspection and research.

The requirements for applying to medical school vary from school to school, but the following are the basic components:

A. Academics

Academic excellence is the foundation of any medical school application. Here’s what you’ll typically need:

  • GCSE/O-Level: Must include Math and English
  • A Levels: Minimum A, A, A**, with Chemistry and another science
  • IB Diploma: 36–42+ points, with 6–7 in HL Chemistry and Biology
  • Polytechnic Diploma: May be considered for local universities with exceptional GPA and relevant modules

B. Standardised Test Score

Standardised tests are a crucial part of medical school admissions. They assess cognitive abilities, decision-making skills, and personal attributes that are essential for future doctors. Depending on your destination, you’ll need to take one or more of the following:

UK

UCAT: Most UK medical schools (e.g., King’s College London, University of Manchester, University of Edinburgh) require UCAT.

  • The test is divided into 4 sections: Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, and Situational Judgement. The first 3 sections are a total score ranging from 1200 to 2700. The Situational Judgement section is evaluated into 4 bands, and achieving this section in band 1 or 2 is preferred.
  • The test is available from July to September, with registration beginning May on the UCAT official website.

Australia

UCAT ANZ: Most undergraduate medical programs (e.g., University of Sydney, Monash University) require UCAT ANZ.

  • UCAT ANZ has the same format as UK UCAT.
  • The test is available in July, with registration beginning March via UCAT ANZ Site.

ISAT (International Student Admissions Test): Some universities (e.g., University of New South Wales, University of Tasmania) require ISAT.

  • ISAT includes 2 sections: Critical Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning, totaling 100 multiple-choice questions. Scoring is percentile-based; aim for the 90th percentile or higher.
  • The test is offered year-round via Prometric centres.

GAMSAT (Graduate Medical School Admissions Test): Required for graduate-entry programs.

  • GAMSAT is divided into 3 separate timed sections, designed to test students in the area of: (I) Reasoning in Humanities and Social Sciences, (II) Written Communication, and (III) Reasoning in Biological and Physical Sciences. Scores range from 0 to 100, with competitive scores varying depending on the school.
  • The test is usually offered twice a year, in March and September.

Ireland

Most Irish medical schools do not require UCAT or ISAT.

  • Admissions are based on academic results, a personal statement, and an interview. Some schools may use HPAT (Health Professions Admission Test) for local applicants, but this is not required for international students.
  • Applications typically open in December. Deadlines are usually set for February of the next year, depending on the school.

Singapore

UCAT: NTU’s Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (NTU LKCMedicine) requires UCAT for undergraduate entry.

  • Same format and scoring as UK UCAT.

NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine does not require UCAT.

  • Focuses on academic results, personal statement, and interview performance.

In addition to the Academic Requirement and Standardised Test Score, crucial components of a medical school application include Personal Statements/Essays, Extracurriculars & Relevant Experience, and Interviews. Discover more details on these requirements in our comprehensive guide.

Singapore Medical Council (SMC) Approved Universities

The Singapore Medical Council (SMC), an advisory body under the Ministry of Health, maintains the compulsory continuing medical education (CME) program, oversees and controls the professional conduct and ethics of registered medical practitioners, and maintains the Register of Medical Practitioners in Singapore.

The SMC provides a list of accredited universities whose graduates are qualified to practice medicine in Singapore. To work as a medical professional in the country post-graduation, selecting an accredited institution is essential. By enrolling in these recognized schools, you secure qualifications that are approved for employment in Singapore.
